The Grimm Audio MU2 is a fully integrated streaming DAC and analog preamplifier designed and manufactured in The Netherlands, combining a Roon Core server, Roon endpoint, proprietary DAC, master clock, and reference-quality analog preamplifier into a single, elegantly minimalist chassis. At the heart of the MU2 is Grimm Audio’s proprietary Major DAC, a groundbreaking discrete 1.5-bit PWM converter running on a high-performance FPGA processor, employing a bit-perfect 11th-order noise shaper operating at 512Fs and 128Fs oversampling through Grimm’s “Pure Nyquist” filters. This architecture was the product of three years of intensive R&D, seeking an ideal middle ground among the strengths of multibit, single-bit, and pulse-width modulation conversion while avoiding the constraints inherent to each. The result is a converter that achieves harmonic distortion of just 0.0001% (–120dB) with a signal-to-noise ratio of 107dB, paired with an internal clock delivering an astonishingly low 0.6 picoseconds RMS of intrinsic jitter, each oscillator individually measured with Grimm’s proprietary jitter analyzer before leaving the factory.

The MU2’s analog preamplifier section employs a no-compromise relay-based volume control that preserves full dynamic range at every listening level. This is not a digital volume approximation, but a precision analog attenuator ensuring absolute channel balance and signal fidelity across its entire range. Two stereo analog inputs (balanced XLR and single-ended RCA), three stereo digital inputs (AES/EBU, coaxial S/PDIF, and Toslink), and both balanced and single-ended analog outputs allow the MU2 to serve as the true hub of a system handling both digital and analog sources. A headphone output is also included for personal listening. With a full Roon Core server onboard, no external computer is required. The MU2 handles streaming from Qobuz, Tidal, and other services natively, with optional internal SSD storage available up to 8TB for local libraries. The vast majority of software running inside the MU2 is developed by Grimm Audio themselves, reflecting their philosophy that total control over every process yields the highest quality and most reliable performance.
