They came back to me as a trade-in from a customer who changed his mind and chose something different before ever opening them. Most wireless headphones are convenience products that happen to sound decent. The Solitaire T comes at the problem from the opposite direction. T+A built an audiophile closed-back headphone first, then made it wireless, and that priority shows up immediately. Switch it off and plug it into a good headphone amplifier, and it plays as a fully passive analog headphone, balanced or single-ended, with no electronics in the path. Power it up and connect over USB-C, and its internal DAC and amplification take over. Go wireless in HQ mode, and the ESS Sabre-based signal path delivers what several reviewers have called the best wireless sound they have heard. The tuning is neutral and composed: bass is tight and well controlled, the midrange is clear without being forward, and the soundstage is unusually well defined for a closed design. Then it does the things a travel headphone needs to do. Three levels of noise cancellation and a transparency mode, physical controls you can operate by feel, and 70 hours of battery life. It is a home headphone, an office headphone, and a travel headphone in one, without the usual compromise in any of those roles. The cognac finish is warm and understated in person and pairs well with the Solitaire family’s chamfered design language.

The T+A Solitaire T is a circumaural closed-back headphone designed by T+A Elektroakustik in Herford, Germany, developed to combine audiophile wired performance with wireless and travel functionality. It draws its design language from T+A’s Solitaire P reference planar headphones. The Solitaire T uses 42mm edge-damped dynamic drivers with cellulose diaphragms. It operates in three modes. In passive mode, the headphone plays as a conventional analog headphone with no powered electronics, supporting balanced and single-ended connection through a cable that is analog at both ends. In active wired mode, the USB-C input feeds the integrated DAC and per-channel amplification, supporting sample rates up to 96kHz. In wireless mode, Bluetooth 5.1 supports SBC, AAC, aptX, and aptX HD codecs, with a High Quality mode that routes the signal through an ESS Sabre DAC chip. Noise cancellation is handled by a separate dedicated processor, with three levels of active noise cancellation plus a transparency mode. Battery life is 70 hours of playback in standard Bluetooth mode and 35 hours with HQ mode engaged, from a 1200mAh lithium-ion battery. Frequency range is 4Hz to 22kHz in active mode and 4Hz to 45kHz in passive mode. THD is 0.05% (1kHz/94dB). Impedance is 64 ohms.
